Red Wine Alto Moncayo 2021
Availability: In stock
Produced by Bodega Alto Moncayo, the wine Alto Moncayo is sorted from 40 to 70-year-old Grenache vineyards planted in very poor soils at altitudes between 550 and 850 metres above sea level, on the hillsides of the Moncayo mountain range, Aragón. The lower-altitude vines have gravel and pebble soils, while the higher-altitude ones have iron-clay and sandy soils.
It is worth noting that this Spanish red wine is crafted by world-class Australian winemaker Chris Ringland, from Barossa Valley.
The grapes were hand harvested at a slightly late ripening stage. Then they were fermented in stainless steel tanks.
Transferred into French and American oak barrels, the wine Alto Moncayo 2021 went through malolactic fermentation and was subsequently aged for a period of 20 months.
As a side note, the 2007 and 2009 vintages of this Crianza red wine from DO Campo de Borja were given a perfect, 100-point score by Robert Parker, who also wrote enthusiastically about them.
Pair this red wine from Campo de Borja with game dishes and casseroles.
Appearance | The red wine Alto Moncayo is deep ruby with a crimson hue. |

Nose | Complex and ever-evolving, this varietal Grenache conveys some intense notes of ripe fruit combined with deep mineral undertones, some hints of toast and spices and some touches of leather, dry earth, underbush and blue flowers. |
Palate | This wine has a gobsmacking concentration, balanced by a lively acidity and a rock-solid structure. Luscious flavours of red fruit and spices, intertwined with a distinctive minerality and some smokey, floral and balsamic suggestions. This wine from Alto Moncayo has some bold tannins that will mellow over time, and a very long finish with an earthy and gently spicy aftertaste. |
Our personal opinion | A mighty varietal Grenache from the rugged mountains of Aragón, the wine Alto Moncayo 2021 is an outstanding effort. |
