Red Wine Aquilón 2016
Availability: In stock
The flagship wine of Alto Moncayo, Aquilón is one of Spain's absolute best Grenache wines. It is crafted by world-class winemaker Chris Ringland, of Barossa Valley fame.
This varietal Spanish red wine is made from old vines, some of which are over 100 years old, grown in the rugged, mountainous region of Campo de Borja, in the norther Spanish province of Aragón.
The vines are planted on the wind-swept hills of the Moncayo mountains. Soils have very low levels of organic matter and temperature differences between daytime and nighttime are huge.
The grapes were meticulously harvested and selected. After that, Aquilón 2016 of the Alto Moncayo winery was traditionally vinified and aged for 24 months in new French and American oak barrels.
A masterpiece in the making, this red wine from Campo de Borja should be decanted a minimum of 2 hours before drinking.
Pair this Crianza red wine with hearty dishes.
Production around 4,000 bottles.
Appearance | The red wine Aquilón is deep purple with a violet rim. |

Nose | The nose of this old-vines Grenache is intoxicating. Aromas of toast and balsam, underscored by extremely pure notions of red and black fruit. Notes of lavender and flowers, along with pepper, Eastern spices, vanilla, cocoa and, on the background, deep, resounding mineral notes that bear witness of the wine's great, harsh terroir. |
Palate | Big, palate-coating and masterfully crafted. Despite its volume, texture is delicate as silk. Perfectly balanced notions of spices, fruit and balsam. Finely smoked, conveying a real sense of terroir and some deep, telluric impressions. This wine of bodega Alto Moncayo has a superb acidity, a surprising freshness -considering its alcohol content- and endless, extremely persistent finish with some remembrances of balsam and dry earth. |
Our personal opinion | A world-class Grenache, Aquilón 2016 is a one of a kind wine. |
