A varietal Mencía, Bembibre is a remarkable Spanish red wine produced by the Dominio de Tares winery.
Grown in steep slate and gravel slopes in the very heart of DO Bierzo, most of the vines are over 80 years of age.
Harvested by hand in 15-kg. boxes, the grapes were meticulously selected in the cellar. After being destemmed and gently crushed, this red wine from El Bierzo was fermented in stainless steel tanks for 25 days with frequent pump-overs and puch-downs.
After that, Bembibre 2018 completed malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels and was aged for a period of 15 months.
This deep Crianza red wine was bottled unfiltered and aged for 2 years before hitting the market.
Decant this Mencía from El Bierzo 1 hour before drinking.
Pair with game dishes and hearty meat recipes.
Appearance | The red wine Bembibre is medium purple with a violet rim. |

Nose | Deep and multilayered, this varietal Mencía suggests intense notes of cherries and raspberries, with some remembrances of plums. Hints of violets and rose petals, alongside deep mineral undertones, some herbal notions and aromas of tobacco and sandalwood. |
Palate | Smooth and luscious, this wine from the Dominio de Tares winery is richly layered and detailed. Notes of menthol, raspberries, dry earth and flowers, with an excellent acidity, velvety tannins and very long finish with remembrances of cocoa, blood orange and wet earth. |
Our personal opinion | A remarkable instance of the Mencía variety, Bembibre 2018 is a terroir-oriented wine which pairs fabulously well with game dishes and long, slow-cooked stews. |
