Details

Produced by the Breca winery, one of Jorge Ordóñez's brands, the wine Brega comes from DO Calatayud, Aragón.

This stunning old-vines Grenache is sourced from two tiny mountainside vineyards composed of slate and quartzite soils. They were planted in 1900 and 1911 with one of the oldest Grenache clones in the world. Yields per plant are ridiculously low.

Harvested by hand and meticulously selected, alcoholic fermentation of this red wine from Calatayud was carried out in stainless steel tanks of different sizes with indigenous yeasts.

After a short maceration, the wine completed malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels. It was subsequently aged for a period of 20 months. The first 10 months were spent in 40% new French oak barrels, and the rest in neutral 600-litre barrels.

Finally, the wine Brega 2019 was blended, bottled, and aged for a further months before its release.

Decant this Crianza red wine a minimum of 2 hours before drinking.

Appearance

The red wine Brega is deep violet with a purple rim.

Nose

Impressively deep and amazingly expressive, this very old vines Grenache conveys some of the purest aromas of red fruit one can experience, nuanced by hints of amarena cherries, sweet spices, black pepper and toast, evolving into an ever clearer mineral and earthy note. All in all, the wine is impressively terroir-bound.

Palate

This red wine of Bodega Breca is bold and powerful, but in full command of itself. Layer upon layer of flavour, with wild berries, some wooden notions and an earthy side. The wine has a sensational acidity and a long finish with some spicy and floral remembrances.

Our personal opinion

It is amazing how the tough terroir of Calatayud can produce a wine as intoxicating as the wine Brega 2019. Once again, Jorge Ordóñez has produced a superb wine.
