Red Wine Cartago Paraje del Pozo 2018
Availability: Out of stock
This is the fourth vintage of Cartago Paraje del Pozo, a high-end Spanish red wine produced by winemaker Mariano García through Bodegas Maurodos.
This single varietal Tinta de Toro is made exclusively from the vines planted in Paraje del Pozo, a little plot with sandy soils located at 700 metres of altitude in the northeastern area of the DO Toro.
The ungrafted, over 45-year-old Tinta de Toro (or Tempranillo) vines were meticulously harvested, and the grapes were selected on site. Once in the cellar, they were destemmed and fermented for 2 to 3 weeks with indigenous yeasts.
Transferred into new and used French oak barrels, Cartago Paraje del Pozo 2018 was aged for a period of 30 months. Bottled in July 2021, it was aged for a further 16 months before its commercial release.
Decant Cartago at least 2 hours before drinking.
This remarkable red wine from Toro has a production of only 3,745 bottles.
Appearance | Imposingly deep, Cartago Paraje del Pozo has a bright, dark garnet colour with a violet rim. |

Nose | There is a growing consensus, which this wine only confirms, that ungrafted Tinta de Toro vines produce some of Spain's deepest and most aromatically complex wines. Very pure aromas of bilberries and blueberries, delicately nuanced by a rich spicy background and some hints of menthol. As Cartago opens, we perceive sophisticated aromas of flowers, lavender and a deep mineral core which highlights the unique personality of the Toro terroir. |
Palate | Bold and big-boned, Cartago from Bodega Maurodos is also lean, intrincate, and very well defined. Ripe black fruit with some toasted nuances, some ripe tannins and first-rate acidity. The older brother of the well known San Román has an undending finish, with an aftertaste of fruit, spices and a mineral touch. |
Our personal opinion | One of Toro's great wines, Cartago Paraje del Pozo 2018 needs to be paired with hearty dishes. Serious ageing potential. |
