Which grape variety is the best suited to express the peculiarities of the unique Priorat soil?
Although some would say Grenache, the wine Cims de Porrera Clàssic makes a strong case for Carignan being the ultimate Priorat grape.
This varietal Spanish red wine is made exclusively from old-vines planted in llicorella - slate - soils scattered over several plots owned by local winegrowers which work closely with the Cims de Porrera winery, run by Marc & Adrià Pérez, members of the famed Pérez wine family from Priorat.
After the harvest, grapes were destemmed and gently crushed. During alcoholic fermentation, which lasted 15 days, the solid cap of grape skins was punched down twice a day to optimize the extraction of aromatic compounds. Finally, the wine was aged for 16 months in French oak barrels.
After that, the wine Cims de Porrera Clàssic 2017 was aged for a minimum of 5 years in the bottle.
It is important to decant this Crianza red wine no less than 2 hours before you drink it.
Pair this red wine from Priorat with hearty meat recipes.
Appearance | The red wine Cims de Porrera is medium purple with a garnet hue at the rim. |

Nose | Few wines as entrancing as an old-vines Carignan grown in slate soils. Paradoxically, the combination of these two rough elements results in an utter delicacy. Ripe plums, blackberries, wonderful notes of dry violets and flowers, cocoa - a primary aroma of the Carignan - and fresh balsamic hints over a deep, throbbing mineral background. Oak ageing shows in some light, well-integrated touches of liquorice, toffee and coffee. |
Palate | Big and meaty, that's for sure. At the same time, though, the wine displays remarkable suppleness and a depth. The acidity and tannins of this wine from Cims de Porrera winery are crisp and lively, creating a sense of exhilaration and continuous enjoyment on the palate. Long, mineral finish with remembrances of bitter herbs and black fruit. |
Our personal opinion | Impressively deep, the red wine Cims de Porrera Clàssic 2017 is an age-worthy Carignan that proves, once again, that Priorat is simply incomparable. |
