Produced by the Casa Aurora winery, one of the projects of Spanish winemaker Germán R. Blanco, the wine Clos Pepín comes from Villa de Albares, a village in the Boeza Valley, located in the Bierzo Alto sub-region, in the coolest part of DO Bierzo.
A field blend, this Spanish red wine is made from Mencía, Garnacha Tintorera (Alicante Bouschet), Palomino, Portuguesa (the local name of Trousseau from Jura) and Grenache. The grapes are sourced from vineyards 75 years old on average, owned by local grape growers and farmed following sustainable and organic techniques. The plots, composed mainly of red clay soils, are located at altitudes between 800 and 1,000 metres.
Manually harvested in mid September, the grapes were destemmed and fermented with native yeasts in used French barrels and clay amphorae with periodic punch-downs. After completing the malo, this red wine from El Bierzo was aged for 13 months in different containers (used oak barrels, Flextank eggs, Boticella and amphorae.)
Bottled unfined and unfiltered, the red wine Clos Pepín Casa Aurora 2021 was finally added a very low dose of sulfites.
This blended Crianza red wine will make a nice pairing with BBQ’d meat, tapas and light dishes.
This vegan wine needs to be aerated 20 minutes before drinking.
Appearance | The red wine Clos Pepín Casa Aurora is medium ruby with some garnet reflections. |
---|---|
Nose | Lively and exuberant, this blend of Mencía, Garnacha Tintorera, Palomino, Portuguesa and Grenache suggests sour forest berries and cranberry sorbet, with a stony minerality and notes of spices, charcoal and herbs. |
Palate | This wine of the Casa Aurora winery of Germán Blanco is crisp and bone dry, with a steely acidity and some smooth tannins. Linear and salty, with loads of crunchy red berries, a watery hint and a long finish with a spicy and herbal remembrance. |
Our personal opinion | The wine Clos Pepín Casa Aurora 2021 captures the freshest, more Atlantic side of DO Bierzo. |
