Details

This varietal Spanish red wine of Bodegas Vivanco is quite special.

A small-batch wine, Colección Vivanco Parcelas de Maturana Tinta is made from an almost extinct indigenous grape from La Rioja, called Maturana Tinta. Interestingly, the latest DNA profiling has shown that the variety may be an ancestor of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Scattered over several plots, the vineyards are situated on the banks of the Ebro river, near the village of Briones. They are sheltered from the northern winds by the Sierra de Cantabria mountain range.

Each plot was separately harvested. Once in the cellar, the grapes were selected twice, cooled down, destemmed and delicately crushed.

The resulting wine must was put into French oak vats, where it was macerated and fermented for 20 days using only indigenous yeasts. After that, this red wine from La Rioja was transferred in new French oak barrels, where it completed malolactic fermentation.

Finally,  Colección Vivanco Parcelas de Maturana Tinta 2018 was aged for 14 months in new and used oak barrels from different origins, with periodic stirrings performed during the first 4 months. The wine was not filtered or clarified before its bottling, so it may present some sediment.

Decant this Crianza red wine 1 hour before drinking.

Appearance

The wine Colección Vivanco Parcelas de Maturana Tinta is deep ruby with a garnet rim.

Nose

Distinctive and complex aromatic profile. Green bell peppers, some herbal and vegetal nuances and a rich display of sweet and exotic spices. At first the fruit lies somewhat understated in the background. As this varietal Maturana Tinta opens, the fruit becomes prominent, and some mineral and forest-floor remembrances also take stage.

Palate

This red wine of Bodegas Vivanco is remarkably expressive. Fresh and palate-coating, full of nuance and subtleties. Coffee, balsam, spices, black fruit, crisp acidity and some delicately sweet remembrances. Long, complex finish. This wine makes one think of a Cabernet Sauvignon red, but with a slighlty wilder, deeper character.

Our personal opinion Characteristic and very well crafted, Colección Vivanco Parcelas de Maturana Tinta 2018 shows that there is still plenty to be discovered in La Rioja.

Maturana
Value
This is quite special. Picture a traditional Cab. Sauvignon, and then add a grassy note and a rustic, sort of peasant touch. The result is very interesting. So is this wine.
