This varietal Spanish red wine of Bodegas Vivanco is quite special.

A small-batch wine, Colección Vivanco Parcelas de Maturana Tinta is made from an almost extinct indigenous grape from La Rioja, called Maturana Tinta. Interestingly, the latest DNA profiling has shown that the variety may be an ancestor of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Scattered over several plots, the vineyards are situated on the banks of the Ebro river, near the village of Briones. They are sheltered from the northern winds by the Sierra de Cantabria mountain range.

Each plot was separately harvested. Once in the cellar, the grapes were selected twice, cooled down, destemmed and delicately crushed.

The resulting wine must was put into French oak vats, where it was macerated and fermented for 20 days using only indigenous yeasts. After that, this red wine from La Rioja was transferred in new French oak barrels, where it completed malolactic fermentation.

Finally,  Colección Vivanco Parcelas de Maturana Tinta 2018 was aged for 14 months in new and used oak barrels from different origins, with periodic stirrings performed during the first 4 months. The wine was not filtered or clarified before its bottling, so it may present some sediment.

Decant this Crianza red wine 1 hour before drinking.

2,064 bottles produced.
