White Wine Coma Blanca 2018
White wine from Priorat. Blend of old-vines White Grenache and Macabeo aged for 6 months in oak barrels and for some years in the bottle.
Availability: In stock
The flagship Spanish white wine of Mas d’en Gil, one of the oldest and most venerable wineries in DOQ Priorat, the wine Coma Blanca is also one of the absolute best whites of the region.
Truly a "Priorat Grand Cru" of impressive depth and finesse, this Crianza white wine is made from a blend of old-vines White Grenache and Macabeo sorted from two vineyards planted in 1941 and 1945, in an area with a rich variety of soils situated in Bellmunt del Priorat. That diversity is an uncommon feature in a region where slate soils are the most predominant ones.
Harvested by hand, the grapes were destemmed and cold-macerated for 8 hours to facilitate the extraction of aromatic components. This Vi de Finca Qualificada (single vineyard wine) was fermented in stainless steel tanks under controlled temperature, after which it was aged in 500-litre French and Austrian oak barrels for 6 months.
Gently filtered before being bottled, the white wine Coma Blanca 2018 was kept in the cellar for some years prior to hitting the market.
It is essential to decant this white wine from Priorat at least 1 hour time before drinking.
If possible, serve this old-vines Priorat white in large, white Burgundy-type glasses.
This blended single vineyard white wine should evolve nicely in the bottle.
Appearance | Clean and bright, the white wine Coma Blanca is deep straw with a golden rim. |

Nose | Superbly complex, this blend of White Grenache and Macabeo seems to combine some Riesling-like features, such as a petrol and smoke, the purest Burgundian notes, namely white flowers, dried grass and white fruit, with a trademark Priorat minerality, nuanced by some smoky and spicy notes. |
Palate | This wine of the Mas d'en Gil winery has a phenomenal texture and a sort of weightless density which puts it on a class of its own. Very detailed and precise, with a razor-sharp acidity and an intoxicating passage. Very pure, this is a wine which conveys a real sense of place. Very long finish, with deep mineral intimations, a bitter note, and an amazing bouquet of Mediterranean herbs. |
Our personal opinion | Not many Spanish white wines can compare to the world-class white wine Coma Blanca 2018. |
