Details

Interestingly, the Viñedos del Contino winery was the first to produce a single varietal Spanish red wine from Graciano, a grape variety that had hitherto only been used in traditional Rioja blends.

The wine Contino Graciano is made from a 3,7-hectare estate planted in two rounds, the first in 1979 and the second in 1989. The 30 to 40-year-old vineyards are at an altitude over 400 metres above sea level, on the basin of the Ebro river.

The result of an excellent vintage, the grapes of this red wine from La Rioja were harvested by hand and then fermented and macerated in 100-hectolitre French oak vats for about 15 days.

After that, Contino Graciano 2011 completed malolactic fermentation and was aged for 13 months in 90% French and 10% Hungarian oak barrels. Finally, this single varietal Graciano was aged for a further 12 months in the bottle before its release.

Drink over the next 7 years. Decant a minimum of 1 hour before drinking.

Appearance

The reserve red wine Contino Graciano has a high cherry-coloured robe with a violet rim.

Nose

Bear in mind that the Graciano variety opens tight, so it is necessary to aerate the wine profusely. After a while, this red wine from Rioja suggests aromas of old wood, lac, Havanna cigars and aromatic herbs, intertwined with hints of plums, liquor-infused berries and withered flowers. Complex stuff.

Palate

With an Atlantic character, and not yet at its peak, this Crianza red wine by Viñedos del Contino has a bold, palate-coating passage through the palate, grippy and sharp, with an excellent acidity and some rounded tannins. Withered vegetables, flowers, pipe tobacco, candied plums and a long mineral finish.

Our personal opinion

Intrincate, deep and unconventional, Contino Graciano 2011 pairs exceptionally well with hearty dishes.

Outstanding, rare wine. I'll have another bottle in my home celler, I'll just wait a couple of years. By then I think this will be at its best.

A single varietal Graciano may be an acquired taste. Once you learn to enjoy it, though, it provides a most rewarding experience.
