Product Description
Details

A varietal Prieto Picudo, Cumal is produced by bodega Dominio Dos Tares in the northern Spanish province of Castilla y León.

Made from a rare native variety, this Spanish red wine is sourced from vines which are almost 100 years old. They are located at an altitude of 800 metres above sea level.

Selected twice, the grapes were destemmed and fermented uncrushed using indigenous yeasts for 28 days. Then they were macerated for several weeks with 3 daily pump-overs and transferred into new and used French and American oak barrels, where Cumal 2018 was aged for 12 months.

Finally, this red wine from Castilla y León was gently filtered before its bottling and aged for a further 12 months before its release.

Decant this Crianza red wine 1 hour before drinking.

Appearance

The red wine Cumal is deep purple with a garnet rim.

Nose

Somewhat closed at the beginning, as this varietal Prieto Picudo opens it reveals a very original personality. Gamey and mineral, with a dense layer of wild berries, some spicy and balsamic notes, and a note of violets and dry earth.

Palate

The palate is powerful and, again, totally idiosyncratic. Dense, but neither massive nor overblown, this wine from Dominio DosTares has a serious potential for evolution. Juicy notes of red and black fruit, extremely pure, with a sort of rustic character which feels very authentic. Terroir-bound and deeply mineral, with a superb acidity and bold tannins. Long, complex finish.

Our personal opinion

The esoteric Cumal 2018 offers an opportunity of discovering an noteworthy Spanish red variety.

Refreshingly "primitive", so to speak. Immensely energetic, with chewy tannins and an earthy side.

This red wine made from an virtually unknown grape is excellent. Pleasantly tannic, vivid, still a little tight, it has a sort of inner thrust that makes it super attractive. Very authentic.
