Details

The quality standards that the Dominio de Tares winery set from its very inception remain uncompromisingly high.

The Mencía grapes used to produce Dominio de Tares Cepas Viejas come from over 60-year-old vines located in DO El Bierzo. They are planted on slopes and terraces with clay, limestone and slate soils at 650 metres of altitude.

Harvested by hand, the grapes were selected, destemmed and fermented in stainless steel tanks with 3 daily pump-overs to foster colour extraction. Then this Spanish red wine was transferred into French oak barrels, where it went through malolactic fermentation.

After that, Dominio de Tares Cepas Viejas 2019 was aged for 10 months in French oak barrels. Once bottled, it was kept for a further 18 months in the cellar before hitting the market.

Aerate this red wine from El Bierzo 30 minutes before drinking.

Nose

This varietal Mencía has a suggestive nose. Blue flowers, touches of red red fruit, wild berries and black fruit, along with delicate touches of spices and toast and, finally, fresh remembrances of menthol, eucalyptus and liquorice.

Palate

Medium-bodied, with a velvety texture that gently coats the palate. Flavours of of vanilla, chocolate, blackberries and mineral undertones. Distant notes of toast and balsam, with ripe tannins, tense acidity and a long, smokey finish. This red wine of bodega Dominio de Tares is delicious.

Our personal opinion

The wine Dominio de Tares Cepas Viejas 2019 is a quintessential Mencía. A grape that can be as gentle as Pinot Noir and as lively as Tempranillo.

Textbook Mencia, for me the greatest discovery - concerning grape varieties - of the last years. Lots of uncommon information here. Gamey, metallic, floral notes, all together.
