Details

Bodega Torre de Oña, a brand of Grupo La Rioja Alta, presents the wine Torre de Oña El Camino, the first bottling of the Viñedos Artesanales collection, that will be comprised of wines sourced from old vineyards saved from oblivion by the winery.

Made from Tempranillo and a 3% of Mazuelo, Grenache and Viura, this Spanish red wine comes from three 80-year-old plots with clay-loam and limestone soils situated in El Pisón, Revilla and Las Naves, near Elvillar, in La Rioja Alavesa.

Hand-picked in 20 kg boxes, the grapes were destemmed and went through a cold-soaking process for 12 days before fermenting in stainless steel tanks. After that, this red wine from La Rioja was transferred into 500-litre French oak barrels, where it completed malolactic fermentation.

Then the red wine El Camino 2021 was aged for 14 months in the barrels, and for a further 5 months in diposits before making the final blend. Bottled in July 2023, it was stored until early 2025.

Attached to the label, there is a piece of vine offshoot from the old vineyards.

Decant this old-vines red wine 1 hour before drinking.

Appearance

The red wine El Camino is deep ruby with some garnet reflections.

Nose

This old-vines Tempranillo with a dollop of Mazuelo, Grenache and Viura is distinguished and profound, showcasing blueberries, raspberries and blackcurrants, hints of pipe tobacco, cardamom, cocoa and black tea, as well as intimations of flowers and balsam, enlivened by a subtle mineral streak.

Palate

This wine of Torre de Oña winery has the typical Rioja savouriness, with impressive definition, a somewhat understated elegance, excellent integration of oak and a noteworthy, restrained complexity. Floral and layered, with a balsamic freshness and a very long, stylish finish.

Our personal opinion

The wine El Camino 2021 is an unquestionably first-class Rioja.
