Some wines combine the qualities of scarceness, native character and impeccable craftmanship in an entirely successful manner. The wine El Espinal de Exopto is one of them.
Produced by Bodegas Exopto, the personal project of Bordeaux-native Tom Puyabert in DOCa Rioja, this Spanish red wine is produced solely from Maturana Tinta, aka Castets, a local variety related to Carmenère which is being recovered for wine production.
This varietal red wine from La Rioja is sourced from a single vineyard composed of clay-limestone soils, El Espinal, planted 30 years ago near San Vicente de la Sonsierra, on the foothills of the Sierra Cantabria, at 650 metres of altitude.
After a meticulous harvest, this single vineyard wine was traditionally vinified. Once the process was finished, the red wine El Espinal de Exopto 2021 was aged for 15 months in used French oak barrels.
The production of this Crianza red wine is very limited. Only 1,400 bottles.
Aerate some time before drinking.
Appearance | The red wine El Espinal de Exopto is deep purple with some violet reflections. |

Nose | Remarkably original, a kind of Left Bank Bordeaux transplanted to Sierra Cantabria, this varietal Maturana Tinta carries aromas of green bell pepper, liquorice and black pepper, with blackberry and blackcurrant preserve, a hint of violets and some earthy undertones. |
Palate | Textured and richly layered, with an impressive mineral vibration, an Atlantic character and a steely, linear acidity which effortlessly carries the weight of the ripe forest fruit. This wine of Bodegas Exopto is spicy and powerful, with a lively undercorrent of limestone and a long, complex finish. |
Our personal opinion | Curious drinkers and demanding aficionados should definitely check out the wine El Espinal de Exopto 2021. |
