Product Description
Details

Produced by the Escoda-Sanahuja winery, the wine Els Bassots is a varietal Spanish white wine made following an uncompromisingly organic and radically non-interventionist approach.

As with all of the company's products, this no added sulfites white wine is crafted following the guidelines of biodynamic agriculture.

Made solely from Chenin Blanc, the grapes come from a single vineyard located at an altitude of 450 metres in the beautiful southern Catalan region of Conca de Barberà. The grapevines grow in soils composed of clay and limestone.

The wine Els Bassots 2023 was crafted following the "Brisat" technique, a local procedure that is essentially identical to that used for making orange wine.

Thus, the wine must was fermented with the grape skins, as with red wines, in order to enhance its colour intensity and aromatic complexity.

After that, this white wine from Conca de Barberà was aged for 6 months in clay amphorae. Prior to its bottling, the wine was neither clarified nor filtered.

It is important thay you aerate this low-sulfites wine a minimum of 20 minutes before drinking.

Appearance

The wine Els Bassots is medium straw with some golden tinges and greyish glints.

Nose

Enticing aromas of bitter almonds and hazelnuts, along with notes of rose petals, jasmine, ginger and citrus. This orange wine made solely from Chenin Blanc also suggests some delightful overtones of lychee, balsam, camomile and sage.

Palate

Intense, focused and linear. This wine of the Escoda-Sanahuja winery has a linear acidity, mild tannins, some bitter and citrus notions and long, complex finish with some remembrances of dry fruit, flowers, spices and dry earth.

Our personal opinion

The no sulfur added wine Els Bassots 2023 deserves serious consideration. This is a radical wine in the best sense of the term.

good, but it will be much better...

Super cool wine, despite being in its infancy. Forget this blather about having to drink natural wine young because of its inability to age. This wine will be much better in 3 years.

Chenin
Value
A natural Chenin that could compete with some serious Loire Chenins. Scented, floral, with a restrained use of oak. The fruit breathes freely, and the terroir imprint is palpable and delectable. Kudos to the winery!!
