If it is true that, as some wine connoisseurs argue, no variety captures the essence of Priorat’s world-famous terroir like an old-vine Carignan grown in slate soils - a statement we fully agree with- then En Números Vermells Carinyena (1919) is a wine of a supreme authenticity and tipicity.
Produced by Sílvia Puig, one of DOQ Priorat’s best, but lesser-known female winemakers, this confidential Spanish red wine is one of the three top-tier products of bodega En Números Vermells, Silvia’s personal project, together with another, even bolder varietal Carignan and a riveting Hairy Grenache.
This small-batch red wine from Priorat is produced from a single vineyard with a 70% slope composed of llicorella (slate) soils, planted with over 100 year-old, low-yielding vines.
The grapes were harvested fully ripe and then macerated and open fermented for 30 days under controlled temperature in Bordeaux and Burgundy oak barrels. After a soft pressing, the red wine En Números Vermells Carinyena (1919) 2021 was matured for 14 months in closed barrels and gently filtered before being bottled.
To fully appreciate this Crianza red wine, decant it at least 3 hours before drinking.
This truly is a one-of-a-kind single vineyard wine. Only 753 bottles produced!!

Nose | That a usually rustic varietly like Carignan – grown, on top of that, in a terroir as rugged and demanding as that of Priorat – can actually produce a wine as subtle, floral and pure as this one is nothing short of amazing. Red flowers, citrus, sour cherry fruit and bitter cocoa, with rich mineral undertones of graphite, crushed slate, flintstone and wet rocks, nuanced by a spark of spices and garrigue. |
Palate | This wine of bodega En Números Vermells is linear and lithe, with a steely acidity and an ever-changing character which only slowly reveals its many niceties and subtleties. Textured and terroir-bound, with kaleidoscopic minerality, amazingly pure fruit, a garrigue note worthy of the finest Châteauneuf and a spellbinding floral finish. |
Our personal opinion | A magical wine, En Números Vermells Carinyena (1919) 2021 has transformed rough slate into silk. |
