We are proud to present En Números Vermells Carinyena (1945), produced by bodega En Números Vermells, the personal project of our good friend Sílvia Puig, one of DOQ Priorat’s most accomplished female winemakers. Along with a compelling Carignan from a different vineyard and an bewitching Hairy Grenache, this small-batch Spanish red wine is one of the three top-tier bottles of Ms. Puig’s wine portfolio.
This varietal red wine from Priorat is produced from a single parcel of Carignan vines planted in 1945, with the mighty Serra del Montsant in the background. Located in Les Planes de Torroja, one of the driest and hottest areas in Priorat - which is saying something - the sloped vineyard with a 30% gradient has soils composed of llicorella (70%) and sauló (30%) -slate and sand, respectively.- It is worth mentioning that the vines yield a mere 300 grams of high-quality grapes per plant.
Ms. Puig harvested the fully ripen grapes by hand and sorted them on site and on entering the cellar. After that, En Números Vermells Carinyena (1945) 2021 was macerated and open fermented for 30 days under controlled temperature in Bordeaux and Burgundy oak barrels. After a gentle pressing, this single vineyard wine was aged for 14 months in closed barrels and delicately filtered before being bottled.
Deep and brooding, truly a mineral distillation of its terroir, this Crianza red wine should be decanted at least 3 hours before drinking.
If properly stored, this red wine from Priorat should definitely improve for years in the bottle.
Did we say small-batch wine? That’s an understatement. Only 661 bottles produced!!
Appearance | The red wine En Números Vermells Carinyena (1945) is deep purple with some dark violet glints. |

Nose | A wine of an almost telluric intensity, this old-vines Carignan suggestes crème de cassis, blackcurrants and blueberries, with hints of fennel, liquorice and lavender, an earthy and smokey background and some vanilla pod and clove overtones. |
Palate | This wine of En Números Vermells winery is warm, rich and massive, with good grip, some powdery tannins and a dark, brooding minerality. An intriguing metallic freshness and an exceptional acidity nicely balance the weight. Impressive concentration of fruit, with a splash of medicinal herbs, spices and Kirsch liqueur leading up to an amazingly long finish. |
Our personal opinion | If you love bold, super ripe Priorat reds, you should definitely try En Números Vermells Carinyena (1945) 2021. |
