Born in the heart of DO Montsant, Espectacle is one of the absolute best wines produced in Spain.

This single plot varietal Spanish red wine is sourced from centenary Grenache vines planted in a scenic, truly spectacular vineyard that forms a natural amphitheatre.

Interestingly, the Espectacle Vins project is a joint venture of several big players in the Montsant and Priorat regions. The soul of the project is René Barbier, creator of Priorat's Clos Mogador. He is accompanied, among other names, by Christopher Cannan, owner of the Clos Figueres winery.

Harvested by hand and selected once on site and twice in the cellar, the grapes were destemmed and gently crushed. Then this red wine from Montsant was vinified in a 40 hl French oak vat and macerated for 4-5 weeks.

After the completion of a spontaneous malolactic fermentation, Espectacle 2020 was aged for 14-16 months in the vat.

It is crucial to decant to decant this Crianza red wine 4 hours before you drink it.

The annual production is around 6,000 bottles.

Appearance

The red wine Espectacle is deep ruby with a garnet rim a some bluish tinges.

Nose

Again, decanting this old-vines Grenache is mandatory. An immense panoply of aromas: ripe black fruit, blood oranges, notes of violets, a dash of bitter chocolate and arabica coffee, garrigue, wet earth, undergrowth, balsam, charcoal, chinese ink and lavender... Opulent beyond belief.

Palate

Although this wine of Espectacle vins is still beginning to assemble its parts, it already shows remarkable focus, a steely acidity and intricate texture. The 2020 vintage is more tannic than the previous ones, a feature which makes this Montsant red wine even more lively and energetic. Memorable finish with hints of flowers, spices and wild berries, underscored by a compelling mineral note - this is a slender, vibrant, limestone type minerality, by the way, not a brooding, dark, Priorat-like one.

Our personal opinion

Let's just say that the name of this wine, Espectacle 2020, is an understatement.

one of a kind
Value
On a par with Gredos' greatest Garnachas, though Espectacle undoubtedly bolder and bigger. Nevertheless, over the years it develops amazing complexity and nuance.
