Details

This fascinating Spanish red wine of the Can Serra dels Exibis Viticultors winery proves that the long recovery process of Catalonia's rich heritage of indigenous grapes has come of age.

Indeed, the wine Exibis La Baula is a blend made from 50% Sumoll and 50% Mandó, two red varieties native to Catalonia that you will hardly find anywhere else in the world.

The grapes come from vineyards planted in clay-limestone soils at an altitude of 500 metres above sea level near the town of Navàs, DO Pla de Bages. The area has a Mediterranean-Continental climate, and the vines are farmed following the guidelines of biodynamic agriculture.

Picked up by hand, the grapes were refrigerated for a whole night and subsequently destemmed. Then the Sumoll grapes were fermented in open barrels and the Mandó grapes were fermented in clay amphorae.

Once the process was completed, the red wine Exibis La Baula 2020 was blended and aged for 12 months in 3rd year French oak barrels.

Aerate this red wine from Pla de Bages at the very least 30 minutes before drinking.

Appearance

The red wine Exibis La Baula is deep ruby with some bluish tinges.

Nose

The nose is as original as it is seductive. Lively aromas of sour red berries, typical of Sumoll, together with some floral hints -violets, withered rose petals- and forest floor remembrances, Mandó's calling card. Everything is subdued and gentle, and the nose keeps evolving as the wine is exposed to air. This biodynamic red wine also has a mineral background, with some spicy tips.

Palate

The palate of this wine of Can Serra dels Exibis Viticultors sort of merges the elegance of a Pinot Noir wine with the tannic structure of a Nebbiolo. Loose, spacious and ever-changing, it has an exceptional acidity, great freshness and a deep, forest-like sensation, nuanced by remembrances of flowers and a mineral note. The fruit appears in  the background, just as a distant echo.

Our personal opinion

A terroir-oriented wine if there ever was one, the red wine Exibis La Bauta 2020 is spellbinding.
