Availability: In stock
This is the second vintage of Les Casetes, the latest addition to Josep Grau Viticultor's wine catalogue and also his most ambitious effort to date.
Mr. Josep Grau sees this one-of-a-kind Spanish red wine, in which he has pushed his Burgundian approach to the extreme, as both a recapitulation of his winemaking career and a door to the future.
A varietal Grenache, this Montsant red wine comes from a single parcel (Paratge de Les Casetes), situated in the village of Capçanes, DO Montsant. Paratge de Les Casetes, incidentally, was the first vineyard acquired by Josep Grau back in 2003.
Situated at 200 metres of altitude and farmed following minimal intervention techniques and organic and biodynamic principles, the parcel has an interesting characteristic: one-half of it, oriented to the north, is composed of limestone soils; the other half, which is south-oriented, has clayey soils.
Hand-harvested and meticulously selected, the grapes were fermented in terracotta amphorae from Tuscany. Then Les Casetes 2021 was transferred into a single 300-litre French oak barrel, where it was aged for 8 months. Finally, it was aged for a further 9 months in the bottle before its commercial release.

Appearance | The red wine Les Paradetes is medium ruby with a reddish rim. |

Nose | We have seldom encountered a Grenache wine from Montsant as supple and refined as this one. Suggestions of red and blue flowers, with dried herbs, liquor-infused cherries and strawberries, as well as some spicy and toasted intimations. Ever-evolving and captivating, with subtle mineral suggestions and hints of lavender and pomegranate. |
Palate | This wine form Josep Grau Viticultor is sleek and astonishingly elegant, with a core of red fruit, amazing precision and a subtle tannic structure which keeps everything in place. Effortless and textured, with layers of flavour, hints of flowers and Mediterranean garrigue and a nice mineral core. Very complex and wonderfully drinkable, with a savoury, memorable finish. |
Our personal opinion | Mr. Josep Grau has outdone himself with Les Casetes 2021. Montsant and Burgundy have never been closer. |
