The one and only Telmo Rodríguez, one of Spain’s most talented and renowned winemakers, is the producer of the red wine Matallana, a top-notch Crianza red wine from DO Ribera del Duero.
As terroir-driven as it gets, this red wine from Ribera del Duero is produced mostly from Tinto Fino (85%), coming from a massal selection of the best Tinto Fino clones of the region. The main component is complemented with the red varieties Valenciano (the local name of Bobal) and Navarro (Grenache), and with the native white grape Albillo.
Covering a surface of 21.5 hectares of bushvines, the organically farmed vineyards are located in the villages of Sotillo de la Ribera, Roa, Fuentecén, Fuentemolinos and Pardilla. The soils have very different compositions, a fact which gives this red wine from Ribera del Duero a distinctive personality.
Manually harvested in little boxes, the grapes were fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks and oak vats. After that, the red wine Matallana 2019 was aged for 14 months in new and used French oak barrels.
Finally, this Spanish red wine was bottled and kept for some years in the cellar before hitting the market.

Appearance | The red wine Matallana is medium purple with some maroon reflections. |
---|---|
Nose | Rich and detailed, this blend of Tinto Fino, Valenciano, Navarro and Albillo is elegantly mineral and smokey, with exquisite aromas of bilberries, ripe cranberries and crème de cassis, a dash of orange peel, nutmeg and cinnamon and hints of ground coffee, liquorice, charcoal and cocoa. |
Palate | Superbly balanced, with impressive power, grippy tannins, great vitality and a steely, palate-cleansing acidity. This wine of Telmo Rodríguez conveys a real sense of place, with the noble austerity that is typical of the great Ribera reds, enlivened by a chalky minerality that is utterly compelling. |
Our personal opinion | A wine for discerning aficionados, Matallana 2019 is an invitation to rethink an all too often misunderstood wine region. |
