Details

This limited-edition biodynamic Spanish red wine is crafted by the prestigious winemaker David Sampedro Gil, head of DSG Vineyards. Interestingly, the wine Phinca Abejera was one of the first Burgundy-inspired, single vineyard wines ever produced in La Rioja.

Some years ago, the trend was labelled "Rioja's third way" by a Spanish wine journalist - the first one being traditional Rioja and the second being the New World-inspired one.

La Abejera is the name of a 0.30-hectare vineyard with limestone soils planted in 1929 in the village of Elvillar. Two of the three varieties of this Rioja red wine, namely Tempranillo (40%) and Viura (15%), come from that vineyard. Graciano, the third one, is sourced from a younger vineyard.

Handpicked and transported to the cellar in 10 kg. boxes, the grapes were  destemmed and spontaneously fermented using only indigenous yeasts. Meticulously vinified, during alcoholic fermentation and subsequent maceration the solid skin cap was frequently punched down in order to soften the tannins of the young Graciano grapes.

After that, the wine Phinca Abejera 2018 was aged in French oak barrels for 36 months. It was bottled without filtration or stabilization.

Decant this Crianza red wine at least 1 hour before drinking.

Appearance

The red wine Phinca Abejera is medium ruby violet hue at the rim.

Nose

This blend of Tempranillo, Graciano and Viura has a mind-bending aromatic expression. Notes of Mediterranean undergrowth, rosemary, fennel, clove, liquorice and menthol. As it aerates, it segues into scents of black currants, the purest red berries, plums, graphite and stone.

Palate

Countless things to enjoy in this superb wine from Bodega Bhilar - DSG Vineyards. Sinewy, deep and supple at the same time, with a remarkable inner energy and a real impression of place. Tannins are chiseled, and acidity is fabulous. Long finish with lively mineral remembrances and a compelling forest-floor note.

Our personal opinion

A wine to drink, but even more a wine to store and treasure for some time. Anyway, prepare to be amazed by the wine Phinca Abejera 2018, right now or within some years.

Fabulous stuff, almost burgundian in its refinement. There's more meat here, though. Sampedro is a trailblazer.
