Details

One of La Rioja's most sought-after wines, Prado Enea Gran Reserva is produced by Bodegas Muga only in exceptional vintages.

This high-end Spanish red wine is made from a traditonal blend of 80% Tempranillo, 18% Grenache, and a dollop of Mazuela and Graciano, coming from the highest vineyards of the winery, planted in alluvial, sandy limestone soils.

This Gran Reserva red wine was fermented naturally, with no temperature control and no yeast addition, in 160 hl American oak casks made in the winery's cooperage.

For 16 days, the skins remained in contact with the wine to ensure extraction of colour and fruit flavours.

After that, the red wine Prado Enea Gran Reserva 2016 was transferred into French and American oak barrels and aged for 36 months.

Finally, this Rioja red wine was clarified with egg whites, and stored in the cellar for a minimum of 36 months before its release.

This classic wine from La Rioja should evolve nicely in the bottle.

Decant at least 1 hour before drinking.

Appearance

The red wine Prado Enea Gran Reserva is medium garnet with a reddish hue at the rim.

Nose

Regal and supremely deep, this blend of Tempranillo and Grenache, complemented with Mazuela and Graciano, embodies the distinctive elegance of classic Rioja. Black and red fruit dominate the nose, together with hints of vanilla, clove and forest herbs. As the wine opens, it exhibits a wide array of earthy remembrances, subtle mineral touches, wild flowers and attractive remembrances of exotic woods.

Palate

With a remarkable potential for improvement, this wine is quietly confident and nicely textured, with silky tannins and a rock-solid, steely acidity. Texture is lush and intoxicating, as it is the fruit. Complex and rewarding, this wine of Bodegas Muga has a very long aftertaste of ripe blackberries, Havanna cigars, fennel, bitter cocoa, green coffee and smoke.

Our personal opinion

Superbly elegant, we recommend that you decant the wine Prado Enea Gran Reserva 2016 for a substantial period of time so you can enjoy it to the fullest.

Rioja or Toro...?
Value
This 2015 Rioja is tasting close to a Toro. On the bottle it's stating 14,5% alcohol, but I would believe 15% too...
Without decanting I'm smelling and tasting manure, but after a couple of hours that's gone?
It's strong and bold with also tasting alcohol up front. It's spice too, but what I miss is the 'wauw' effect with some silkiness. It's a good wine but at this price I'll pass the next time.
And, scoring 97 Parker points???
