Red Wine San Román Garnacha 2020
Availability: In stock
The renowned Spanish oenologist Mariano García, technical director of Bodegas Aalto and owner of Bodegas Mauro, both in Ribera del Duero, presents San Román Garnacha wine, the latest addition to the catalogue of Bodegas San Román, Mr. García’s personal project in DO Toro.
A varietal Grenache, this Spanish red wine is sourced from a 60-year-old vineyard with sandy soils planted at an altitude of over 700 metres above sea level. The plot is located in the Paraje de El Monte, near the village of Villaester, province of Zamora. Farming is environmentally friendly and follows the principles of organic agriculture.
The excellent 2020 vintage of this red wine from Toro was characterized by moderate temperatures throughout the year and an above-average rainfall, particularly in spring, which was followed by a hot and stormy summer. Hand-harvested on September 22, the grapes arrived at the premises in an excellent sanitary condition and with near optimal levels of acidity and maturity.
Gently stomped, the fruit went through a whole-cluster fermentation with native yeasts for 21 days at a maximum temperature of 23oC. After that, the red wine San Román Garnacha 2020 was gently pressed and then transferred into 500-litre French oak barrels, where it was aged for 19 months.
Bottled in May 2022, this Crianza red wine from Bodegas Maurodos was aged for a further months before hitting the market.
It is important to decant this old-vines Grenache at least 1 hour before drinking.
Very limited production. Only 2,754 bottles (75 cl.) and 205 magnums.
Appearance | The red wine San Román Garnacha is deep ruby with some purple reflections. |
---|---|
Nose | Remarkably original profile, closer to a Grenache from Châteauneuf-du-Pape than to the Grenache wines from Priorat or Gredos. Blueberry pie and Marrasquino cherries, with some mineral nuances, hints of Eastern spices, flowers and scrubland, and a spark of cocoa and liquorice. |
Palate | Once again, the talent of Mr. Mariano García, founder and manager of Bodegas San Román, shines through. Sleek, textured and supple, with beautifully ripe forest berries, a keen acidity and some plush tannins. Both precise and massively drinkable, with a long, elegant finish. |
Our personal opinion | Captivating and full of potential, the wine San Román Garnacha 2020 shows a different side of the increasingly prestigious DO Toro region. |
