Availability: In stock
Produced by world renowned winemaker Raúl Pérez, Ultreia Saint Jacques is a fabulously priced varietal Mencía from El Bierzo.
Some years ago, this Spanish red wine made headlines when it was known that it had made its way into the Wine List of Michelin three-star Le Bernardin, NY's best seafood restaurant.
Most of the grapes come from old vines planted in the Villegas vineyard, located near Valtuille de Abajo. The rest come from younger vines located in Villadecanes.
Picked by hand and meticulously selected, grapes were gently macerated and then went through a whole bunch fermentation in open oak vats with no temperature control.
After the process, which lasted up to 5 months, the red wine Ultreia Saint Jacques 2021 was aged for 12 months in oak vats, 225-litre French oak barrels and concrete diposits. Finally, the wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Fortunately, we needn't have dinner at Le Bernardin to enjoy a bottle of this red wine from El Bierzo.
Appearance | The red wine Ultreia Saint Jacques is medium ruby with a garnet rim. |
---|---|
Nose | Lively and transparent, this varietal Mencía wine conveys aromas of raspberries and bilberries, with remembrances of violets, citrus and herbs over a mineral and spicy background. |
Palate | This varietal Crianza red wine is supple and fresh, with great vivacity, round tannins and a crisp acidity. Fruit-forward and subtly floral, this wine of Raúl Pérez has a long finish with some mineral and balsamic remembrances. |
Our personal opinion | If one had to choose only one wine to illustrate the revolution that Spanish wine has undergone over the last years, the amazingly priced Ultreia Saint Jacques 2021 wouldn't be the worst choice. |
