Details
The winery that put the DO El Bierzo name on the map, Bodegas Castro Ventosa is the producer of the wine Valtuille Cepas Centenarias, formerly known as Valtuille Cepas Viejas.
This single vineyard Spanish red wine is made basically from Mencía, with a touch of Alicante Bouschet (aka Garnacha Tintorera) and a droplet of Bastardo (aka Merenzao and Trousseau) and other red varieties. Grown in sandy-clay soils, most of the vines are over 50 years old.
The grapes were hand harvested, 30% destemmed and meticulously vinified in French oak vats by the one and only Raúl Pérez. After macerating for a long time, they were aged for 12 months in 225 and 500-litre French oak barrels.
Bottled unfiltered, the wine Valtuille Cepas Viejas 2021 was aged for around 12 months in the cellar prior to its commercial release. It was bottled in June 2023.
Decant this red wine from El Bierzo 1 hour before drinking.
If properly stored, this Crianza red wine will improve considerably over the next years.
