A few years ago, Dominik Huber, head of famed bodega Terroir al Límit from Priorat, decided to expand into the neighbouring DO Montsant. He suitably named his new company Terroir Sense Fronteres.

As it turns out, Mr. Huber's Montsant wines are at least as interesting as the ones from Priorat. Judging from Vèrtebra de la Figuera, one could even argue that they show even more finesse.

A varietal Grenache, this Spanish red wine is produced from high-altitude vineyards grown in clay soils and farmed following minimal intervention techniques.

Harvested by hand, the grapes were first destemmed and fermented for about a week with indigenous yeasts. Again, in order to reduce human intervention to the minimum, no pump-overs or punch-downs were performed during the fermentation process of this Montsant red wine.

After that, Vèrtebra de la Figuera 2021 was aged in concrete tanks for a period of 6 months.

Aerate at least 30 minutes before drinking.

6,000 bottles produced.

Appearance

The red wine Vèrtebra de la Figuera is medium ruby with a bluish rim.

Nose

The nose of this varietal Grenache feels very pure. Pristine suggestions of wild strawberries, Mediterranean garrigue, liquorice and flowers in bloom. There is nuance and transparency here, as well as a well defined sense of place.

Palate

Medium-bodied and very fresh, this wine from Terroir al Límit is delicately earthy and floral, with smooth tannins and a sensational freshness. Again, the wine feels fluid and effortless. Long finish, with remembrances of red berries, Med garrigue and flowers.

Our personal opinion

Pure and exhilarating, Vèrtebra de la Figuera 2021 is all about nuance. Here Montsant meets Burgundy.

D. Huber makes the most Burgundian - or perhaps I should say Gredo-like - of all Catalan Grenache wines. This feels fresh, pure and effortless. Very nice wine.
