Buchanan

Buchanan

An entrepreneur’s dream come true.

The well-known Buchanan distillery was founded in 1884 by Canadian-born James Buchanan, an entrepreneur of Scottish extraction with a knack for business.

With an eye on enticing the English consumer of the late Victorian age, James Buchanan created a kind of blended whisky that was smoother, mellower and not as peated as the typical Scotch whisky of the day. The first great commercial success of the Buchanan distillery was the legendary “Black and White”, named after its trademark black-coloured bottle with a white label packaging. One of the world’s best- known whiskies, B&W is still being produced today.

Over the following decades, the Buchanan company kept growing and merging with other distilleries, a process that eventually led the brand to become one of the world’s biggest Scotch whisky producers and distributors. The commercial success of James Buchanan earned him a peerage in 1922, when King George V made him Lord Woolavington. Mr. Buchanan died in 1935 at the age of 85.

Currently owned by the British multinational Diageo, the Buchanan distillery remains faithful to the philosophy of its founder. Smooth and inviting, the blended whiskies of Buchanan are gentle crowd- pleasers whose freshness made them perfect as cocktail and mixology ingredients.
