Dalwhinnie
A venerable distillery located in the coldest area of the Scottish Highlands.
Founded in 1897 by Scotsmen George Sellar and Alex Mackenzie, the Dalwhinnie distillery is located in the remote village of Dalwhinnie (meaning “meeting place” in the Gaelic language), between two mountain ranges, in the Cairngorm National Park, in the icy heart Scottish Highlands. The distillery, which gets its water from the Allt an T'sluic spring, located above 2,000 feet, is the coldest, and one of the highest, in Scotland.
After changing hands several times and overcoming several setbacks, in 1992 the distillery closed its doors and went through an exhaustive renovation process that lasted for 3 years. In 1997, the Dalwhinnie distillery was bought by its current owner, the British multinational beverage conglomerate Diageo.
The tipology of the Dalwhinnie whisky is typical of the area. This is a smooth, warm and full-bodied whisky, made from gently peated malted barley and distilled in traditional copper stills. The house is famed for its 15, 18 and 20 year old Single Malt Whisky bottlings, which are aged in ex Bourbon American oak casks and exhibit a refined, gently spicy and lightly smokey character very much appreciated by whisky aficionados all over the world.
