Don Julio

The Don Julio distillery was founded in 1942 by the young Don Julio González, an entrepreneur with little money but plenty of talent and ambition. The brand is currently owned by the British multinational Diageo.

After getting a loan from a local businessman, Don Julio built his first distillery, called “La Primavera”, and dedicated all his time and energy to fulfilling his lifelong ambition of producing the world’s absolute best tequila. To that effect, the introduced some innovations in agave cultivation and fine-tuned each and every step of the producing process, from harvest to cooking and milling the piñas.

The agave plantations of the Don Julio are perched at nearly 2,000 metres above sea level, on the so- called Mesa del Centro or Mexican high plateau, a volcanic region from Mexico with clay-rich soils that, together with the demanding climate, characterized by extreme temperature contrasts, provide excellent conditions for growing top-quality blue agave, the origin of the Don Julio tequila.

The blue agave plants are carefully tended by the Jimadores, families of highly knowledgeable Mexican peasants which have been working with the Don Julio distillery since 1947. Following the exacting quality standards established by the founder, the Jimadores individually harvest and process every agave plant. Once their job is finished, the master distillers are responsible for transforming the precious agave piñas into exquisite tequila blanco, tequila reposado or tequila añejo.
