Nikka

Nikka

One of oldest distilleries in Japanese.

A branch of Asahi holdings, the Nikka distillery was founded in 1940 by Masataka Taketsuru, the father of Japanese whisky. Driven by the desire to know the ins and outs of whisky production, Mr. Taketsuru spent two years in Scotland, between 1918 and 1920, during which period he worked as an apprentice for three distilleries and took chemistry courses at the University of Glasgow. Upon his return home, his detailed notes from that period soon became the handbook for all subsequent Japanese whisky producers.

The Nikka brand currently makes a wide range of products from its two production centers in north Japan. The original distillery is located in Yoichi, an area chosen by the founder Masataka Taketsuru because of its similarity with the climate and the general conditions of the Scottish Highlands, such as pure air, proximity to the sea and quality of the water. Years later, Masataka built a second distillery in the foggy Miyagikyo area, in a confluence of two rivers that, again, is noteworthy for the superior quality of its water.

Whether in its Single Malt or blended whisky expressions, the complexity derived from the contrasting characteristics of the distillates coming from the Yoichi and Miyagikyo areas makes the Nikka whisky stand out among the rest of Japanese whisky brands.
