Listán Blanco

The most widely planted variety in the Canary Islands.

The variety Listán Blanco is the flagship white grape of the Canary Islands. Listán Blanco is one of the 130+ synonyms of Palomino Fino, Andalusia’s most important white variety, traditionally used for Sherry production.

In the Canary Islands, the Listán Blanco variety is typically grown in soils of volcanic origin, at altitudes that can reach over 1,000+ metres above sea level. Moderately resistant to plagues and diseases, the variety is interesting for its ability to withstand heatstrokes, which are not unfrequent in the area.

An early-ripening variety, Listán Blanco grapes produces medium-loose bunches with medium-sized, yellow- coloured, thin-skinned berries.

The wines made from Listán Blanco are prone to oxidation and tend to have a moderate acidity. Because of its neutral character, the variety, when successfully vinified, can convey in a transparent manner the spirit of the terroir. In the Canary Islands, it is particularly adept at expressing the mineral character of the volcanic soils.

Typically vinified on its own, the white wine variety Listán Blanco is sometimes blended with other local varieties, and also used for making sweet wines. Increasingly prestigious and sought-after, the Listán Blanco wines have made a spectacular quality leap in the last years, a fact that have earned them consistently high scores from some of the world’s most prestigious wine critics.
