4 Kilos Vinícola

Founded in September 2006 by Francesc Grimalt and Sergio Caballero, the history of 4 Kilos Vinícola began when two winelovers decided to produce their first wine in the garage of a common friend. Thus was born 4 Kilos. Though half of the the wine was fermented in milk tanks and the other in French oak barrels, the result was rather impressive considering the scarcity of the means. In fact, it was the quality of that first wine which impelled Mr. Grimalt and Mr. Caballero to give winemaking a serious try.

Shortly after that, they acquired a little winery in the town of Felanitx and began purchasing old vineyards north and south of Mallorca. During the process, they kept studying the characteristics of the Majorcan native grapes, and particularly the effect of the soils on the different varieties' behaviour. As far as grape compatibilty is concerned, they discovered that one kind of soil clearly stood above the rest: the Call vermell, a clay loam soil with abundant Iron Oxide which resulted to be the best possible breeding ground of Mallorca's most representative native red variety, a refined grape called, quite aptly, Callet.

Besides Callet, 4 Kilos Vinícola has also recovered other interesting local varieties, such as Fogoneu and Manto Negro. The winery focuses on the production of red wines, thought it also crafts some white wines. An environmentally friendly company with a growing commitment to sustainable farming (almost all of its wines are certified organic), it is fair to say that, right now, 4 Kilos Vinícola is Mallorca's most interesting winery.

As for the name, 4 Kilos refers to the amount of money the two friends had to invest to start the company. In Spanish, “Kilos” was the colloquial way of referring to 1 milion pesetas, the local currency before the euro. So, 4 milion pesetas was their initial investment.
