Aba Solleira

A family-run winery in the land of heroic viticulture.

The Aba Solleira winery was created in 2017 by Carlos Rodríguez, a graduate in Oenology and Agricultural Engineering, and the oenologist and agricultural technician Emilia Gómez. The couple met while studying at the University of La Rioja, and after working for several years in the wine business they decided to start their own project in the province of Ourense, DO Ribeira Sacra.

The region of Ribeira Sacra, whose wine history harks back to Roman times, enjoys excellent conditions for producing quality wines. It has a moderate climate, a good amount of sunlight, a rich variety of soils and a catalogue of native grape varieties, both red and white, which are perfectly adapted to the conditions of the area. On top of that, Ribeira Sacra has some of the most scenic and steepest vineyards in the whole world, only comparable to the ones in the Mosel and the Rhine areas. Taking good care of those vertiginous vineyards is not an easy task, but an act of heroic viticulture.

The wines from Aba Solleira are currently produced from a .5 hectare of estate-owned vineyards and 2 hectares of leased ones, planted with old and young vines. The main variety is the indigenous red grape Mencía, which is grown sandy-clay soils of granitic origin.

In order not to hinder terroir expression, vinification of the hand-picked grapes is respectful and minimalistic. The grapes are typically fermented in stainless steel tanks, but also in wooden vats and egg-shaped concrete diposits. Then the wines are aged in 500-litre French oak barrels. Finally, all of the wines from Bodega Aba Solleira are aged for some months in the bottle before being launched onto the market.

Though still in the developing stage, in view of the results one can already say that Aba Solleira is one of Ribeira Sacra’s most interesting wine projects in recent years.
