Akutain
A family winery in the heart of La Rioja Alta.
Founded in the mid 1970s by Juan José Peñagarikano Akutain, Bodega Akutain is located in Haro, the wine capital of La Rioja Alta, one of DOCa Rioja’s most prestigious subzones. A family project focused on producing terroir-driven wines, the company is currently run by Jon Peñagarikano Akuatin, the founder’s son, who took the helm in 2013.
The vineyards of Bodega Akutain surround the main winemaking facility – in the style of a French château -, the farthest of which is just 3 km away. Comprising 4 estates, each with an extension of 1 to 2 hectares, the vineyards sit at 500 to 650 metres of altitude, in the heart of Valle del Ebro, beneath the Montes Obarenses, an area with a Continental climate and some Mediterranean influence composed mainly of clay-limestone soils. Vineyard management follows traditional local techniques to protect and enhance biodiversity and microbial life of the soil. No herbicides or chemicals are used, and the use ofagrochemicals is extremely circumspect.
All of the wines of Akutain winery are produced from estate-grown grapes. The product portfolio consists of two series: Akutain Classic, comprising the Cosecha, Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva vintage wines made from a traditional Rioja blend, and Akutain Selection, which identifies the small- batch and one-off bottlings.
