Albet i Noya
Pioneers in organic farming, the people behind the Albet i Noya winery are driven by a real passion for the land.
In 1903, the Albet family settled in Can Vendrell, Serra de l'Ordal, at a distance of 40 kilometres from Barcelona. Nowadays, they are the owners of a 210-hectare estate, 90 hectares of which are planted with grapevines. In 1972, Josep Maria Albet i Noya, fourth generation and current head of the company, began the conversion to organic farming. He was one of the very first people in Spain to do so. It was the initial step of a process that came to fruition some years later, when the family was able to buy the Can Vendrell estate, which they had been growing for generations. In 2004, the winery inaugurated the Bodega Xapallà, a state-of-the-art facility in which the wines are aged and bottled. In 2010, they inaugurated Bodega de la Era, a building dedicated exclusively to the production of their top tier wines.
Nowadays, the wines by Albet i Noya, all of them certified organic, come from vineyards located at an altitude of 350 metres above seal level, in an area called Costers de l'Ordal, on mild slopes and terraces. The soils have very low levels of organic matter and are composed of clay and sand, under which there is a calcareous, magnesium-rich layer which gives a particular freshness to the wine.
Interestingly, the winery also has a, so to speak, R&D department, in which it grows some experimental varieties, 4 white and 6 red ones, which will possibly be the origin of future and exciting organic wines.
