Alonso del Yerro
An estimable family project in Ribera del Duero and Toro.
The origins of bodega Alonso del Yerro go back to 2002, when Javier Alonso and María del Yerro, husband and wife, bought 26 hectares of vineyards in the province of Burgos and decided to leave their hometown city of Madrid to pursue their dream of making wine under the family name in DO Ribera del Duero.
Sitting between 800 and 840 metres of altitude, the vineyards of Alonso del Yerro winery in Ribera del Duero were planted in 1989 with Tempranillo vines, the sole variety grown by the winery. The estate is divided into several plots, each bearing the name of a family member. The most important one is Finca Santa Marta, the place where it all started and where the family house is located.
In order to capture the purest and most transparent expression of the terroir, the development of the Alonso del Yerro project was guided from its inception by two world-renowned experts: the consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt, of Bordeaux fame, and the agricultural engineer Claude Bourgignon, one of the world’s foremost experts in the microbiology of the soil. Following their recommendations, the vineyards are manually tended, following environmentally friendly and sustainable techniques and using no chemicals or synthetic products of any kind.
The wine portfolio of bodega Alonso del Yerro in DO Ribera del Duero is comprised of two wines: an entry-level red, called Alonso del Yerro, and María, the flagship wine. Besides its project in Ribera del Duero, Bodega Alonso del Yerro also makes the red wine Paydos in DO Toro. This is a varietal Tinta de Toro sourced from old vines 80 years of aged grown in clay-limestone and granitic soils. Production is around 5,000 bottles.
