Alto Moncayo

Alto Moncayo

The wines of the Alto Moncayo winery are the ultimate expression of the Grenache from Aragón.

On the foothills of Pico Moncayo (the highest peak of the Ibérica Mountain Range, with an elevation of 2,315 metres), we found the venerable, old Grenache vines from which Bodegas Alto Moncayo crafts its prestigious wines.

The winery was launched in 2002 by Jorge Ordóñez, who co-owns the company alongside several local and international partners. The chief oenologist is the renowned Australian winemaker Chris Ringland. The field oenologists are the Spaniards José Luis Chueca and Miguel Sanmartín.

The 92 hectares of grapevines owned by the winery are divided among several plots located at altitudes 500 to 800 metres above sea level. The soils are shallow, poor and composed of red clay, pebble stones and slate.

Belonging to the Campo de Borja DO, the vineyards are 40 to 80 years of age, though there are several centenary plants. They grow under an exacting climate, with tough winters, extremely hot summers, scarce rainfall, and a relentless, cold, dry, dessicating northern wind called Cierzo, which frequently blow at over 100 kilometers per hour.

The wines by Alto Moncayo have a great ageing potential and have won numerous international awards. Interestingly, one of its wines was the first wine from Aragón to receive a perfect, 100-point score in Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.
