Avelino Vegas Bodegas

The Avelino Vegas winery was founded in 1950 by Avelino Vegas in the village of Santiuste de San Juan Bautista, Segovia, central Spain. Located in DO Rueda, the winery is currently run by the third generation of the family, headed by Ms. Cristina Vegas, the founder’s granddaughter and current chief winemaker. A graduate in biotechnology, Ms. Vegas also has a National Oenologist Diploma by the University of Bordeaux.

In the DO Rueda, the Avelino Vegas winery produces white wines from Verdejo, the flagship variety of the region, and Sauvignon Blanc. The grapes are sourced from vineyards composed of sandy and rocky soils, in an area with huge temperature differences between daytime and nighttime (over 20ªC) that allow the grapes to achieve optimal levels of natural acidity.

In 1993, bodega Avelino Vegas expanded its operations to the DO Ribera del Duero, where it founded Bodega Fuentespina. Located between Peñafiel and Pesquera de Duero, the Ribera del Duero red wines of Avelino Vegas are made from Tempranillo vineyards grown in limestone and sandy soils that bring a distinctively mineral element to the wines. The wines are aged in American and French oak barrels.

After that, the Avelino Vegas winery further expanded into La Rioja, where it produces red wines, and the DO Cigales, an area known for its characterful rosé wines. Nowadays, the company manages well over 1,000 hectares of vines in total.
