Bodega Javier San Pedro
A fine example of Rioja’s new generation of winemakers
Founded in 2013 by the heir of an old wine family from La Rioja Alavesa, Bodega Javier San Pedro has two lines of products. The first, Cueva de Lobos, consists of young, easy-to-drink wines, while the Viuda Negra series comprises the Crianza and Reserva wines, which are made from the oldest vines of the company. Besides, the winery produces Anahí, a semi-sweet white wine intended as an homage to the mother of Javier San Pedro.
Bodega Javier San Pedro Ortega currently owns 10 hectares of vineyards, farmed with minimal intervention techniques and environmentally-friendly procedures. The youngest vines are under 20 years old, while the oldest, located in the Finca La Taconera vineyard, are around 100 years of age. The main grape varieties are Grenache, Tempranillo, Viura and Malvasía. Besides, there are some vines of Sauvignon Blanc and Tempranillo Blanco.
Fermented and macerated in stainless steel tanks under controlled temperature, the wines of bodega Javier San Pedro Ortega are usually aged in French and American oak barrels. Those produced from old vines, though, are aged exclusively in 225-litre French oak barrels.
