Marañones
An oenological adventure with a happy endind, Bodega Marañones was one of the first companies to put on the map the wines produced in the Madrid region.
Bodega Marañones was born from the effort of J. Fernando Cornejo, a land propietor and businessman from Madrid, and Fernando García Alonso, an agronomic engineer currently in charge of the agricultural and winemaking operations.
Located in the town of San Martín de Valdeiglesias, the Marañones winery belongs to the DO Vinos de Madrid, an area between the cities of Toledo and Ávila placed at the junction of the Gredos and Guadarrama mountain ranges. There, old vineyards alternate with olive, almond and fig trees, along low lands peppered with mild hills. At altitudes between 650 and 850 metres, the area has some long, cold winters and hot summers with great temperature differences between daytime and nighttime, a key factor for a steady and balanced ripening of the grapes.
The company owns 20 hectares of vineyards with an average age of 50, all of which are organically farmed. A believer in the potential of native varieties, Bodega Marañones grows mainly Grenache for the red wines, and the little-known Albillo Real for the whites. The winemaking team devotes much effort to extending the vegetative cycle of the plants as much as possible, in order to achieve a good balance between freshness, acidity, ripeness and tannin. The resulting red wines are distinctively elegant, floral and uncommonly delicate, considering the traditional Spanish winemaking sytle. As for the whites, they are dense and unctuous, with an attractive bitter touch and a long finish.
The estate is divided in 4 plots: Marañones, meaning “Blackthorn” in Spanish, at altitudes between 700 and 850 metres; Andrinoso, at an altitude of 850 metres; Peña Cruzada at 750 metres of altitude; lastly, Dehesa, at 650 metres. All of them have sandy soils of granitic origin.
Each plot is manually harvested, selected on site and brought to the cellar in little boxes. Once in the cellar, the grapes are selected again, separately vinified according to the variety and fermented with indigenous yeasts. The results are simply outstanding.
In 2021, Bodega Marañones was acquired by the Pago de Carraovejas group, who put the young oenologist Javier Blanco - known for its work at bodega Ossian - in charge of the project. The winery currently produces around 60,000 bottles of wine per year.
