Bodegas Exopto
The personal project of a Frenchman who is rethinking the Rioja tradition.
In 2000, Frenchman Tom Puyabert came to Spain to work as sales agent for the prestigious cooperage Saury. After falling in love with the wines and vineyards of La Rioja, in 2003 he changed gears and decided to start his own wine project, Bodegas Exopto, with the aim of exploring the amazing diversity of terroirs in Spain's most prestigious wine region.
The two things that set the Exopto wines apart from most Riojas are their freshness and expressiveness. The wines from Bodega Exopto are made from 10 hectares of old vineyards divided into 15 little parcels with different soil compositions, altitudes, weather conditions and sun orientations. Each of the parcels encapsulates, in short, a different terroir, which the winemaking team takes great pains to preserve through an exquisitely respectful vinification and ageing process.
The Exopto wines are fermented in highly porous concrete tanks and oak vats that permit an adequate oxygenation and prevent reduction. As for the ageing, Bodegas Exopto from Laguardia only uses French oak barrels of the utmost quality, the degree of toasting and sizes of which are dependent upon the characteristics of each specific wine and vintage.
