Bodegas Fariña
Bodegas Fariña is at the forefront of the DO Toro.
The 300 hectares of vineyards owned by Bodegas Fariña are located in an exceptional spot within the DO Toro. It is an area defined by an extremely demanding Continental climate, only slightly tempered by an Atlantic influence, with great temperature differences between daytime and nighttime, very little rainfall, and a rich tapestry of sand-based soils which offers great possibilities to the winemaking team when it comes to blending and experimenting.
The sand component is a key factor of the quality of the wines by Bodegas Fariña, as it prevents the growth of the dangerous phylloxera parasite. Contrary to what is the norm in virtually every wine region in Europe, most of Toro's grapevines are ungrafted, a fact that multiplies the character and authenticity of the Tinta de Toro-the region's flagship variety-grapevines.
The company was founded in 1942 by the father of the current owner, Manuel Fariña, in the town of Casaseca de Las Chanas, 30 kilometres from Toro. At the beginning the winery produced rather rustic wines, but as soon as Manuel took charge after he had finished his oenological studies, he radically redefined the whole agricultural and winemaking approach, lowering the per plant yields, advancing the harvest date, and choosing the best oak barrels to age the wines. This improvements soon resulted in a dramatic increase of quality which not only boosted the company's sales, but also put the DO Toro on the map. Thus, Manuel Fariña became the first president of the DO in 1987.
All of the Spanish wines produced by Bodegas Fariña in Toro are produced from Tinta de Toro. Besides that, the winery also produces wines under the label Vinos de la Tierra de Castilla y León, made from Tempranillo, Grenache, Verdejo, Moscatel and Albillo.
