Bodegas Itsasmendi

Bodegas Itsasmendi

Bodegas Itsasmendi is one of the most interesting producers of Txakolí, the typical white wine of the Basque Country.

Bodegas Itsasmendi was created in 1989 in Bizkaia by a group of local winegrowers. The first vintage was released in 1995, and in 2002 the company built its headquarters near the town of Gernika.

Bodegas Itsasmendi winery owns 35 hectares of grapevines planted on mild hills near the Gulf of Biscay. Divided among 15 plots across 8 towns inside the homonimous province, the vineyards bear the label DO Bizkaiko Txakolina. The yields amount to 8,000 kilograms of grapes per hectare, well below the 13,000 kilograms per hectare authorized by the DO regulatory council. The two main varieties are the indigenous Hondarrabi Zuri and Hondarrabi Zuri Zerratie; besides that, there is also a small amount of Riesling, and a little plantation of Izkiriot Handi, a rare, high-acidic variety also used in the Jurançon region which is usually vinified overripe.

The Itsasmendi winery currently produces around 250,000 bottles of wine per year using state-of-the-art technology. Its Txakolí wines are fresh, light and Atlantic. All in all, Bodegas Itsasmendi has successfully given a modern twist to a traditional style of wine.
