Bodegas Monovar
This winery, one of the oldest in Alicante, sits amidst a beautiful Mediterranean landscape.
A brand of MGWines, Bodega Monóvar is situated in Collado de Azorín, between Laguna de Salinas and Valle del Mañán, in DO Alicante. Surrounded by mountains, the vineyards are interspersed with pine trees, aromatic plants and holm oaks.
The red varieties grown by Bodegas Monovar are Monastrell, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot. As for white grapes, one can find the southernmost Riesling vineyards in the whole of Europe.
The flagship wine of Bodega Monóvar, whose history goes back more than five centuries, is the legendary Fondillón. This is a semi-sweet wine produced in an oxidized, rancio style from over 80-year-old Monastrell vineyards. Unlike other sweet wines like Port and Sherry, Fondillón is a non-fortified wine made exclusively from overripen grapes, with no wine alcohol added after fermentation.
The most treasured possession of Bodegas Monóvar is the old collection of soleras from the Poveda family. The collection comprises 200 American oak barrels over 100 years of age, which are used to age the Fondillón wines. Mr. Salvador Poveda, the current head of the family, is the winemaker responsible for keeping the tradition alive. Besides him, the winery usually collaborates with top-level figures such as Raúl Pérez, one of the world’s best oenologists.
