Bodegas Ostatu
This family-owned winery from Rioja Alta produces impeccable wines with a traditional character.
The origins of Bodegas Ostatu date back to the 1970s, when Maria Asunción and Doroteo Sáenz de Samaniego started selling the wines produced in the family-owned inn (Ostatu, in the Basque language). To honour the family heritage, the main facility of Bodega Ostatu was built adjacent to the inn, a historic XVIIIth century building located in Samaniego, La Rioja Alta.
Bodegas Ostatu currently owns 34 hectares of vineyards, which are farmed following environmentally sustainable techniques. Divided among over 50 parcels, they are planted with the traditional Rioja varieties. The red grapes are Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuela (aka Carignan), and the white varieties are Viura and Malvasia.
The grapes are picked by hand, carefully selected and meticulously vinified. Maceration and alcoholic fermentation are carried out in stainless steel tanks under controlled temperature, performing pump-overs and punch-downs of the solid skin cap if needed. The wines of Bodegas Ostatu usually go through malolactic fermentation in used oak barrels, in which they are also aged for variable amounts of time.
The portfolio of Bodegas Ostatu consists of two lines of products: “Singulares” and “Sensatos”. The first line is dedicated to terroir-bound wines with distinctive features; the second line, comprised of wines made from a blend of old and recent vintages, highlights the traditional character of the wines from La Rioja Alta.
