Celler Cal Bessó
The joint venture of the Castellví Figuerola family and grape grower Jaume Vallès in DO Montsant.
In 2015, local grape grower Jaume Vallès and the Castellví Figuerola family, owners of Celler de l’Encastell in DOQ Priorat, founded Celler Cal Bessó in DO Montsant. The estate comprises two vineyards, Les Rotes and La Presa, both situated in Els Guiamets, province of Tarragona. They are planted with young vines, 15 to 25 years of age, and with 60 to 70-year-old vines.
Soils are mainly calcareous, although there are patches composed of llicorella (slate), granite and clay- limestone. Celler Cal Bessó grows the traditional red varieties Grenache, Samsó (the local name of Carignan), Hairy Grenache and Ull de Llebre, as well as the international ones Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The white varieties are White Grenache and Macabeo.
Formerly used as a fruit warehouse, the facilities of Celler Cal Bessó were conveniently adapted to meet the requirements of wine production. The wines are aged and fermented in stainless steel tanks and French and American oak barrels.
The current production of Celler Cal Bessó is around 25,000 bottles. The goal is to double the number in the near future.
