Celler Vinyes Domènech

Native to the region, but with no experience whatsoever in winemaking, the Domènech Family had only three assets when they decided to start the adventure of building a winery from scratch: hope, drive, and an old 10-hectare vineyard badly in need of care.

Located an altitude of 500 metres above sea level, the main building of Celler Vinyes Domènech lies in the midst of a wonderful landscape of almond trees, olive oils and grapevines in the Serra de Llaberia mountain range, belonging to the DO Montsant. The area has several features which make it almost ideal for growing grapes: great differences of temperature between daytime and nighttime, precious clayey- limestone soils, and a Mediterranean sea breeze which compensates the scarce rain.

With the aim of creating an entirely self-sufficient building, the Vinyes Domènech winery was built using low-impact materials, following sustainable criteria and bioclimatic principles.

As for the organically farmed vines, whose ages range from 15 to over 70, Celler Vinyes Domènech grows both international and local varieties, the most planted of which is Grenache, both in its red and white versions. It is worth mentioning that Teixar, the flagship wine of the winery, is made from a rare species of Grenache, called “Hairy Grenache” (Garnatxa Peluda.) As for the white wines, Rita is an interesting blend of White Grenache and Macabeo. Besides, the winery also grows some Grey Grenache, old vine Carignan and young vine Merlot. In the Els Guiamets area, the Domènech family recently recovered a couple of old Macabeo vineyards.

Speaking of the red wine Teixar, in 2015 the outstanding work done by winemaker Joan Ignasi Domènech and his team was recognized by the Incavi (Catalonia's regulatory authority) with the "Vi de Finca Qualificada" seal (meaning "Certified Estate Wine"), Catalonia's highest official quality recognition.
