Costers del Priorat

The Costers del Priorat winery was founded in the year 2000 by Enric Solé, Pau Urgell, Josep Massada, Marc Massana and Josep Ramon Sedó, a group of winemakers and entrepreneurs with long experience in the wine trade. Committed to producing quality wines under the DOQ Priorat seal, the team recruited Josep Mas, a prestigious Catalan oenologist, to work as chief winemaker.

The estate of bodega Celler Costers del Priorat comprises three historic vineyards, named Sant Martí, Mas Alsera and Les Solanes, situated respectively in Bellmunt del Priorat, Torroja del Priorat and El Molar. Although they are only a few kilometers apart, the three have rather different characteristics as regards soil composition and climate. This fact is not at all uncommon, incidentally, in an area with an orography as complex as that of Priorat.

The Costers del Priorat winery works exclusively with traditional Priorat varieties, such as Grenache and Carignan, the most important red ones, and the white grapes White Grenache, Macabeo, Muscat à Petits Grains and Xarel·lo. The oldest vineyards were planted in the 1930s, and the youngest ones are around 15 years old. To improve grape quality, yields are rigurously controlled through different vineyard management techniques.

Nicely integrated into the surrounding landscape, the main facility of the Costers del Priorat winery overlooks the Les Solanes vineyard, which is situated in the village of El Molar, on the southern tip of DOQ Priorat. The winemaking equipment is stored inside an old XVth century country house, whose underground cellar has been aptly repurposed to function as a modern winery. The building is equipped with 300 oak barrels and vats and several clay amphorae, which allow for an average yearly production of 90,000 bottles.
