Dominio de Atauta

The Dominio de Atauta winery was founded in 1999 in the Valle of Atauta, at a distance of 7 Km from the village of San Esteban de Gormaz, through which it flows the Duero river.

With a view of Somosierra, Urbión and the Moncayo mountains, the vineyards of Dominio de Atauta are situated in what used to be the Golbán river. This area is alive with vegetation, trees and aromatic herbs, such as thyme and rosemary, as well as mushrooms and abundant animal life, like hares, partridges, deer, and wild boar.

Despite its being scarcely populated, the Atauta region has a rich winemaking history, a particularly noteworthy feature of which is the ancient neighbourhood of underground wine cellars dug on a limestone hill, dating from the XVIIIth century.

One reason that the Dominio de Atauta winery is unique is the altitudes at which grapes are cultivated. The vineyards are situated between 950 and 1,000 meters above sea level, which provides for slower ripening periods for the grapes. The main variety is Tinto Fino (aka Tempranillo), scattered across 600 different parcels of vines, whose soils are typically composed of sand and clay on top of a limestone bedrock. Most of the vines are over 100 years of age and gobelet trained. Agriculture follows the tenets of biodynamic farming.

Critically acclaimed, the wines of Dominio de Atauta, such as the single vineyard red wines La Mala, Valdegatiles, La Roza, Llanos del Almendro and San Juan are among the top expressions of DO Ribera del Duero, faithfully conveying the many nuances of its world-class terroir, from mineral and austere to ripe and hedonistic. In the 2020s, the winery released its first white wine, made from the native variety Albillo Mayor.
